Nutmeg Studio is named for the spice that adds warmth and depth without overpowering — which mirrors how I approach design. Thoughtful, balanced, and purposeful.
About
Welcome to Nutmeg Studio — I’m Meg Hodson, founder and Verified Shopify Partner since 2019.
I design and build Shopify stores that balance considered design with clear structure — the kind that make shopping feel effortless and support real business growth.
Some turning points don’t feel dramatic at the time. They just quietly change everything.
Mine began in 2015, when I was asked to build a 200-product Shopify store for a local bike shop in Cape Town. At the time, Shopify was still new in South Africa, with few resources to rely on. Most of the learning happened through trial, persistence, and a refusal to settle for “good enough.”
The project took months. There were moments of frustration and doubt, but when the store finally launched, something clicked.
With my background in SEO, I helped the site rank for competitive search terms. Organic traffic quickly became their main source of sales. Watching real orders come through — and seeing a small business grow because of work I’d done — gave me a deep sense of clarity.
This was the work I wanted to do.
A decade later, I work with established brands, growing businesses, and thoughtful new launches. The work is often challenging and sometimes messy, but always meaningful. I get to build my business alongside raising my kids, create every day, stay endlessly curious, and learn through every project.

My Approach
Great eCommerce design starts with understanding how people buy.
Before specialising in Shopify, I spent years working in publishing, communications, and copywriting. That experience taught me something essential: clarity always outperforms cleverness. The best websites don’t try to impress — they guide, inform, and remove friction so customers can make confident decisions.
What sets my work apart is the combination of deep Shopify expertise and strategic content thinking. I care about how your store looks, but more importantly, how it works — how customers move through it, where they hesitate, and what helps them convert.
Every store I build is designed with intention, longevity, and real-world use in mind — not just launch day.
What drives my work
Too many well-crafted products are held back by websites that don’t reflect their quality.
I see it often:
- DIY stores that undermine brand credibility
- Slow, clunky platforms that frustrate customers
- Beautiful design paired with confusing navigation and poor user experience
- Stores built without an understanding of eCommerce strategy
I believe your website should work as hard as you do — building trust, supporting sales, and running reliably without constant technical intervention.
That’s what I’m here to build.
Not just good-looking websites, but strategic infrastructure that supports growth.
