Your product page has seconds to make someone care. If your first sentence is dull, overly descriptive, or sounds like everyone else’s, browsers scroll past even if the product is amazing.
But if your opening line sparks curiosity, emotion or desire? You’ve got their attention, and attention is what leads to sales.
Let’s fix your first line together.
Step 1: Choose your hook type
Here are five ways to start your product description strong - no copywriting training required.
1. The Desire Hook – Paint the dream.
“Finally — candles that make your home smell like summer holidays.”
2. The Problem Hook – Agitate the pain point.
“Tired of coffee that tastes like cardboard? Meet your morning upgrade.”
3. The Curiosity Hook – Spark intrigue.
“What do all stylish home offices have in common? This.”
4. The Transformation Hook – Highlight the ‘after.’
“From cluttered counter to calm kitchen — meet your new favourite storage hero.”
5. The Emotion Hook – Evoke a mood or memory.
“Soft, slow, and made for Sunday mornings.”
Step 2: Fill in the formula
Once you’ve picked your hook type, plug your product into one of these simple formulas.
Finally + [Desired Result]
“Finally — skincare that actually works for sensitive skin.”
Tired of + [Problem]? Meet + [Product].
“Tired of losing your earrings? Meet the jewellery box that keeps it all together.”
What if + [Dream Outcome]?
“What if your living room could smell like a luxury spa — every day?”
From [Before] to [After] — meet [Product].
“From dull to dewy — meet the face mist your skin will thank you for.”
Because + [Emotional Reason].
“Because mornings are better when they smell like vanilla and coffee.”
Step 3: Test it
Before you hit publish, ask yourself these questions:
-
Does this line make your customer feel something?
-
Is it short enough to read at a glance?
-
Does it highlight a transformation, benefit, or emotion?
-
Does it make someone want to keep reading?
If you can tick all four you’ve nailed it.
Step 4: 5 ChatGPT prompts to help you write product hooks faster
If you’re stuck staring at a blank page, use these prompts inside ChatGPT to get inspired (and then edit them in your own voice):
-
“Write 5 short, emotional opening lines for a product description about [product]. Make them feel natural, not salesy.”
-
“Create 3 product hooks using the Desire approach for [product category].”
-
“Turn this boring product description into 5 scroll-stopping hooks: [paste your text].”
-
“Write 5 ‘before and after’ style hooks for [product].”
-
“Generate a list of curiosity-driven first lines for [product], under 12 words each.”
Tip: Always tweak AI-generated lines to sound like you. The goal is to capture the emotion — not copy the tone.
Step 5: Bring it all together
Once you’ve written your hook, drop it right at the top of your product description — before any specs or details.
That first sentence will now:
-
Pull readers in
-
Make them feel something
-
Keep them reading long enough to hit “Add to Cart”
It’s one small change that can completely shift how your product page performs.
