The Wicked Family - WordPress to Shopify Migration

WordPress to Shopify Migration

A WooCommerce to Shopify migration for an EU-based MX apparel brand; moving off a slow, plugin-heavy website and onto a platform built to sell globally and run smoothly.

The Challenge

The Wicked Family sells MX gear to riders across Europe and beyond, but their WordPress store was starting to work against them.

Core problems:

Too many plugins. The site was carrying a heavy stack of plugins just to do what a modern eCommerce platform should do natively. That load was slowing the site down and causing regular issues, which was costing sales and creating ongoing stress for the owners.

Global selling wasn't working. A currency switcher plugin was meant to handle international customers, but it wasn't holding up.

The store manager couldn't run it himself. Day-to-day updates depended on outside developer help rather than something the team could handle confidently on their own.

The plugin and software stack was costly. Between the third-party plugins and a separate email marketing tool, the brand was paying for a patchwork of tools to do what should have been simple.

The Solution

This was a full migration; we moved The Wicked Family onto a platform whose core features could replace most of what the old stack was patched together to do.

Global selling, built in, not bolted on

This was the heart of the project. Shopify's powerful global selling tools mean the store can now run different international markets, each with its own product catalogue, pricing and inventory. Customers arrive on the site and are automatically switched to their local currency. On the old site Klarna (a buy now pay later option) hadn't worked properly for EU customers; now it does. Of all the platforms I've worked with, nothing matches Shopify when it comes to smooth, easy-to-manage global selling infrastructure.

A faster and cleaner store on mobile

With most of The Wicked Family's traffic coming from mobile, the rebuild prioritised a faster, smoother, and cleaner experience on small screens.

Training the store manager to run it independently

Rather than handing over a finished store and leaving it there, I put together custom tutorial videos covering everything the store manager needs, including editing the homepage. This is one of the things I most like about Shopify: it's intuitive for store owners to manage themselves, once they've been shown how.

Native email marketing, without the extra software

I migrated the full subscriber list into Shopify Messaging, Shopify's built-in email marketing tool. Automations and campaigns can now be managed from inside Shopify itself, which takes a separate paid tool like Mailchimp out of the equation for a brand that mainly needs straightforward email marketing functions.

Results & Impact

A store built to sell internationally and stay in the owner's hands.

Global selling;: automatic local currency switching, market-specific catalogues and pricing, and Klarna's buy now pay later option for EU customers.

A faster, cleaner site, rebuilt with mobile as the priority.

An independent store manager, equipped with custom video tutorials to make updates confidently.

A simpler, more stable foundation, with far fewer moving parts than the old plugin-heavy WordPress build.

Projects like this are a good reminder of why I keep recommending Shopify to growing brands. The platform is constantly evolving, in small ways and big ones, and it's rare to find a business problem it can't solve better than the patchwork of plugins most WooCommerce stores end up relying on.
