The Challenge

The Act Labs is a clean skincare brand, founded on the Russian banya ritual tradition and recently launched in South Africa. The range is serious: botanical, vegan and cruelty-free formulas made to European laboratory standards, already recognised with a Glamour Beauty Award and press features across Glamour, Aspire and Holistica.

The products were excellent. The website didn't show it.

It looked generic. The original store was functional, but it read like a default Shopify setup: stacked product rows, no real brand story, and a premium range presented with no sense of premium. For a brand whose whole proposition is serious botanical ingredients, made without compromise, the site undersold the product range.

The messaging wasn't clear. What made The Act different - the European formulation standards, the rare actives and the ritual philosophy at the heart of the brand - wasn't coming through with clarity. Customers couldn't quickly understand why these products were worth it.

Customers had no clear path to purchase. With a broad catalogue spanning face, body, hair and kids, shoppers arriving with a specific concern, such as pigmentation, ageing, or breakouts, had no guided way to find the right products. They were left to piece it together alone.

The product pages didn't sell. Imagery, information and structure weren't built around how customers decide to buy. The pages listed products; they didn't make the case for them.

The Solution

This was a complete strategic rebuild, not just a redesign. The value sits as much in the thinking as in the final design.

The project ran on intensive review and strategy sessions throughout. Rather than working to a fixed template, every decision, such as structure, messaging, page layout and product presentation, was worked through deliberately, applying established conversion optimisation and buyer-psychology principles to this specific brand and its customers.

The work focused on five pillars:

A clean, elegant redesign

We rebuilt the store on a beautiful, refined theme chosen to match the calibre of the brand and product. The new design gives the brand room to breathe; considered typography, a refined colour palette, generous white space and a premium feel that reflects what's inside every formula.

Strategic messaging clarity

We refined the brand's messaging across the site, bringing the strongest parts of the story forward: the European formulation standards, the rare botanical actives, and the ritual philosophy rooted in the banya tradition. A first-time visitor now understands the brand's value within seconds.

Skincare routine pages for guided discovery

We created dedicated routine pages built around real customer concerns: Glow & Radiance, Pigmentation & Uneven Tone, Firm & Renew, Clarity & Balance, Deep Hydration, and Calm & Barrier Repair. Instead of leaving shoppers to navigate a large catalogue alone, the store guides them to the right products.

Conversion-first product pages

This is where the deepest thinking went. We rebuilt every product page around buyer psychology and conversion principles: social proof through integrated reviews, strong product imagery, and information architecture that gives customers exactly what they need to decide, in the right order, without overwhelming them. We also guided the owner through rewriting product copy, so each page leads with benefits.

Empowering the owner to run it all

A beautiful store is only valuable if the brand can own it. Throughout the project, we ran custom training tailored to The Act Labs' team, so they can update content, manage products and apply the same conversion thinking themselves, with confidence and without depending on a web developer.
