When WordPress starts getting in the way

Your website is slow. It needs constant attention. It doesn't work or look good on mobile. And your competitors are outpacing you with faster, better Shopify stores.

Shopify offers a simpler way to manage your eCommerce business, with hosting, security, checkout and essential store functionality built into one intuitive platform.

I help established businesses move from WordPress and WooCommerce to Shopify, carefully migrating products, content and essential data while protecting existing SEO value.

The result is a better shopping experience, which helps your business get more sales, and a website that's easier for your team to manage, without the constant technical maintenance.

The WordPress to Shopify migration process

1. Understand

We start with the business and its existing website.

I'll review your WordPress or WooCommerce setup, product catalogue, customer experience, functionality and the practical realities of running your store.

I'll also look at your existing SEO and, where available, analytics and search data.

What a website review involves

Depending on the store, this includes:

  • Product catalogue and data structure
  • Categories, navigation and filtering
  • Existing pages and content
  • Organic traffic and SEO performance
  • Customer and order data
  • Plugins and custom functionality
  • Payment and shipping integrations
  • Mobile shopping experience
  • Day-to-day store management

The aim is to understand what needs to move, what needs to change and whether Shopify is the right platform for your business.

2. Plan

The findings become a practical migration plan.

We'll establish which products, pages, customer records and other data need to be transferred, how existing functionality will work in Shopify and where the new website can be improved.

We'll also plan the new store structure and identify important SEO considerations before development begins.

Some things can move across relatively easily. Others need to be rebuilt, restructured or approached differently.

Getting these decisions right early makes the rest of the migration much smoother.

3. Design

A migration is a good opportunity to improve the shopping experience.

I'll design your new Shopify store around your brand, products and the way customers shop.

That doesn't mean changing everything for the sake of it. If something on your existing website works well, we can keep the thinking behind it.

The goal is a website that feels right for your brand and makes it easier for customers to find, understand and buy your products.

4. Build and Migrate

Your new website is built in Shopify while your existing WordPress store remains live.

I use a carefully selected Shopify theme as the foundation, with customisation and development appropriate to the business.

Products, collections, customer records and other agreed data are migrated using suitable tools and processes.

Existing plugins and integrations are reviewed, with Shopify-native functionality, apps or custom development introduced where needed.

I'll also implement the agreed SEO migration plan, including URL redirects, relevant metadata and important content.

Throughout the build, the focus is on creating a well-structured Shopify store that your team can manage without unnecessary technical complexity.

5. Test and Launch

Before launch, we'll test the new store across desktop and mobile.

This includes checking products, navigation, search, filtering, checkout, payments, shipping and the functionality your business relies on.

We'll also check redirects, important SEO settings and the migrated data.

Once everything is approved, we'll plan the switch from WordPress to Shopify, keeping disruption to a minimum.

Your existing website can generally stay live until the new store is ready.

A new platform is an opportunity to build a better store

One of the things I enjoy most about WordPress to Shopify migrations is the opportunity to untangle years of accumulated complexity.

A website that's been running for eight or ten years often carries a lot of history.

Plugins added to solve individual problems. Product categories that no longer make sense. Pages that have been patched and updated. Functionality that nobody is quite sure how to manage anymore.

Some of it is important. Some of it isn't.

A migration gives us the chance to look at the whole system again.

What does the business actually need? How should customers find products? What information matters? What can Shopify handle without additional apps?

The result should be a website that works better for your customers and feels considerably simpler for the people running it.

Is a WordPress to Shopify migration right for you?

This service is best suited to established product businesses that have outgrown their existing WordPress or WooCommerce website.

You might be here because:

  • Your website has become slow or unreliable
  • Plugin updates and compatibility issues are becoming a problem
  • You're spending too much time on website maintenance
  • Your product catalogue has grown and navigation needs attention
  • Your current website isn't performing well on mobile
  • You rely on a developer for routine changes
  • Your brand has evolved but the website hasn't kept up
  • You want to consolidate separate stores or markets
  • You need more advanced eCommerce functionality
  • You're ready for a platform that feels simpler to run

You don't need to know exactly how the migration should work.

Figuring that out is part of the project.

What does a WordPress to Shopify migration cost?

Most WordPress to Shopify migration projects fall within my Momentum or Bespoke service, depending on the size and complexity of the store.

Momentum starts from R52,000 ($5,200 USD for international clients)) and is suited to established brands that need a more considered design, deeper UX thinking and greater Shopify customisation.

Larger or more complex stores are quoted individually through my Bespoke service.

After an initial discovery call, I'll recommend the simplest approach that will do the job properly.
