Fancy websites don’t sell—But THIS will

If your website isn’t built on solid foundations, all the fancy features in the world won’t help.

In this post I’m going to break down what actually makes a website work—and how to fix yours so it brings in more leads, sales, and bookings for your business.

The Problem: Why fancy features don’t equal sales

  • Trendy animations that slow everything down, making your website harder to use
  • Unique (but complex) layouts that make navigating your website confusing
  • The latest trending fonts and / or colours that are hard to read
  • Pretty but irrelevant images and video
  • Fancy website scrolling effects that are too distracting

While these things might look impressive, they don’t answer the one question every visitor has:

“Is this for me?”

If your website doesn’t make it immediately clear who you help, what you offer, and how to buy, people won’t stick around to figure it out.

The Truth: A website that works is a website that’s clear

A high-converting website isn’t about being the flashiest—it’s about making it easy for people to say YES. When someone lands on your site, they should instantly know:

  • What you do
  • Who you do it for
  • Why they should trust you
  • How to take the next step (buy, book, or contact you)

If any of that is missing, confusion sets in—and confused visitors don’t buy.

The Fix: How to make your website sell

Instead of chasing design trends, focus on getting the foundations right.

#1 Crystal-Clear Messaging

Your website should answer this in the first five seconds: What do you offer, and why should I care?
No fluff. No jargon. Just clear, simple language your customers actually understand.

#2 Simple, Easy Navigation

If people have to dig around to find what they need, they’ll leave. Keep your navigation menu simple, logical, and easy to follow.

#3 Strong Calls-to-Action (CTAs)

Every page should guide visitors to the next step—whether that’s booking a call, making a purchase, or signing up for your email list. Make your CTA buttons obvious.

#4 Fast Load Times & Mobile-Friendly Design

A slow website = lost sales. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, 40% of visitors will bounce. And if it’s not mobile-friendly? You’re missing out on a huge chunk of traffic.

#5 Trust Signals

People need to feel confident before they buy. Include testimonials, case studies, and trust badges (like media features or secure payment icons) to build credibility.

The Reality Check

If someone lands on your site and feels:

  • Confused about what you offer
  • Overwhelmed by too much information
  • Unsure of what to do next

They’re gone.

Your website isn’t there to just look pretty – it needs to convert. Otherwise what’s the point?
