Don’t make these homepage hero mistakes

Your homepage hero section matters a lot more than you might think. Here’s why…

I use this amazing free tool called Microsoft Clarity. It uses heatmapping to show what users actually click on when visiting your website.

This is what I discovered…

On mobile, users click on two things most often…

#1 The navigation menu icon

#2 The call-to-action button on the hero section (this is the above the fold section on your homepage, which is usually an image or video section with a heading and text).

This is a golden opportunity to get more visitors engaging and moving deeper into your site (increasing the likelihood of a sale). But many websites miss the mark here.

Common mistakes I see websites making in their homepage hero section:

#1 No call-to-action button (eg Shop Now).

#2 Vague or generic headline (eg Welcome to ‘Store Name’).

#3 Not showing (through images or video) what you offer or sell.

#4 The hero section image being used is low quality / irrelevant to what you’re selling.

This is what you should do instead (to increase engagement and help encourage conversions):

#1 Visible, thumb-friendly navigation menu icon.

#2 Clear and highly visible call-to-action button in the hero section above the fold taking the user directly to a shop-related page (Bestsellers, collection on promotion, sale etc).

#3 Clearly communicate what you sell / offer.

#4 Use a high-quality image or video that accurately represents your product or business.

Small changes like these make a big difference.

A simplified hero section + a clear call-to-action = More clicks, more conversions, more success.
